Free Keyword Research Inside Claude with an MCP Connector

Claude has no built-in search volume data, so connect a keyword tool through MCP. Keyword Tool offers a free connector in Claude's Connectors directory and a paid Pro version with Google and Bing volumes; Mangools has a beta MCP with free starter lookups. Then ask Claude to expand, measure, cluster and map keywords to pages.

Why Claude needs a keyword tool

Ask Claude for search volumes without a data source and it will either refuse or estimate. Estimates are not good enough to choose what to write. A keyword connector gives Claude real numbers from Google Keyword Planner, Bing or the tool's own index, so its suggestions rest on demand you can verify.

Pick a data source

  • Keyword Tool (free connector): listed in Claude's Connectors directory as "Keyword Tool: Free SEO Keyword Research". Good for keyword ideas, with limited data.
  • Keyword Tool Pro (paid): adds search volume from Google and Bing keyword planners, cost per click, competition and trends. Its MCP covers Google, Bing and Microsoft Copilot data, with daily request limits by plan.
  • Mangools MCP (beta): connects KWFinder and SERPChecker data. Free accounts get a one-time bonus of 100 keyword and 100 SERP lookups for API and MCP use.
  • DataForSEO or Semrush-class tools: worth it when you need large volumes of data or backlink research. Paid, usage-based.

Connect Keyword Tool in claude.ai or Claude Desktop

  1. Open Claude and go to Settings > Connectors.
  2. Search for "Keyword Tool". Two cards appear: the free connector and Keyword Tool Pro.
  3. Choose one card and click Connect. Do not connect both, or Claude may call the free one and return limited data.
  4. Approve the sign-in window, then start a new chat and enable the connector from the tools menu if it is not on by default.

Claude Code (Keyword Tool Pro)

Terminal

claude mcp add --transport http keywordtool https://mcp.keywordtool.io

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code, select keywordtool and complete the browser sign-in. Add --scope user to use it across all projects.

Mangools as an alternative

In Claude, go to Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, name it Mangools and paste https://mcp.mangools.com/mcp. Sign in with your Mangools account when prompted.

A keyword workflow that produces a page plan

  1. Seed: give Claude 3-5 seed topics in your customers' words, plus your country and language.
  2. Expand: ask for long-tail and question variations from the connected tool, not from memory.
  3. Measure: pull search volume and difficulty or competition for the shortlist.
  4. Cluster: group keywords that one page could answer, and label each group's intent: learn, compare, buy or fix.
  5. Map: assign each cluster to an existing page or a new page, so two pages never target the same intent.
  6. Brief: for each new page, ask for an outline whose headings answer the cluster's questions directly.

Check the source: Ask Claude to name the tool and call that returned each number. If a figure has no tool call behind it, treat it as a guess and re-run the request.

How I use this for an AI tutoring business

For a service like private AI coaching, the useful keywords are rarely the biggest ones. "Learn AI" is huge and vague; "Claude Code course for non-developers" or "AI training for executives" is small but shows clear intent. I use the workflow above to find those intent-rich clusters, then write one page per cluster and link each page to the matching course track.

Copy-paste prompts

Expand and measure

Using the Keyword Tool connector for Google India in English, find 40 long-tail and question keywords for these seeds: [seed 1], [seed 2], [seed 3]. Then pull monthly search volume for all of them and return a table sorted by volume.

Cluster by intent

Group the keywords from the table into clusters that a single page could answer. Name each cluster, label its intent (learn, compare, buy or fix), total its search volume and list the keywords in it.

Map clusters to pages

Here are the pages on my site: [paste URLs and titles]. Map each keyword cluster to the best existing page, or mark it as needing a new page. Flag any two pages that would compete for the same cluster.

Write a brief

For the cluster [name], write a content brief: working title under 60 characters, a 50-word direct answer for the top question, an H2 outline where each heading answers one keyword, and 4 FAQs from the question keywords.

Troubleshooting

  • Volumes come back empty or very limited You are probably on the free connector. Use it for ideas, and measure the shortlist with a paid plan or another source.
  • Numbers look wrong for your market Always state country and language in the prompt. Search volume differs a lot between, say, India and the United States.
  • Claude answers without calling the tool Say "use the Keyword Tool connector" explicitly, and check that the connector is enabled in the chat's tools menu.
  • Too many keywords to act on Cluster first. Work on clusters, not individual keywords, and cap a first plan at 10 pages.

FAQ

Can Claude do keyword research on its own?

Claude can brainstorm keyword ideas, but it has no live search volume data. Connect a keyword tool through MCP so volumes and trends come from a real data source.

Is there a free keyword research connector for Claude?

Yes. Keyword Tool lists a free connector in Claude's Connectors directory, and Mangools gives free accounts a one-time bonus of 100 keyword lookups for MCP use. Full search volumes generally need a paid plan.

Which is better for Claude: Keyword Tool or Mangools?

Keyword Tool is the quickest start because it is in Claude's directory and covers Google and Bing. Mangools adds keyword difficulty and SERP analysis. Many people use one for ideas and the other for difficulty checks.

Does keyword research still matter for AI search and AEO?

Yes. AI answers are built from pages that already answer specific questions well. Keyword and question research tells you which questions people ask, so you can answer them directly on your pages.
