Shopify Marketing with Claude - Developer Guide

Connect your store and run marketing tasks on products, orders and discounts - from chat.

No dashboard hopping for routine work. Ask Claude in plain language, review what it proposes, and let it work against your live store.

What this guide covers

Adding Shopify marketing skills to Claude

  • Connecting your store with the official Shopify connector
  • Authorising access safely - read-only vs read / write
  • Six test prompts to prove the connection works
  • The marketing workflows the skills unlock

Who it is for: Store owners, marketers and developers who already run a Shopify store and use Claude.

Two parts: skills teach, the connector connects

A set of skills adds Shopify-specific marketing workflows to Claude. The Shopify connector then gives Claude live access to your store, so those workflows run on real products, orders and customers - not on exports you paste in.

You → Claude + Skills → Shopify Connector → Your Store

Skills

Ecommerce SEO, conversion rate optimization, email and SMS marketing, upselling, cross-selling and more. A skill activates automatically when a Shopify marketing task comes up.

Connector

The official Shopify connector, authorised through your Shopify admin login. It controls what Claude can see and change.

Before you start

NeedWhy
A Shopify store you can log into as adminAuthorisation happens in Shopify admin; if you manage several stores, you pick the right one at login.
A Claude account (claude.ai)Skills and Connectors are both configured from Customize in Claude.
Time to review access carefullyShopify shows the access level requested before you approve - read it before clicking Install / Approve.

Start read-only if you can. Read-only covers viewing products, orders and customers. Choose read / write only when you want Claude to also create or edit - for example discount codes and collections.

2. Step 1 - Add the Shopify marketing skills

Skills are what make Claude good at Shopify marketing specifically, rather than generic marketing advice. Install them first, so they are ready the moment the store is connected.

  1. Download the skills from GitHub: the awesome-ecommerce-skills / marketing-growth set on github.com.
  2. In Claude, go to Customize → Skills → “+” → Upload skill, and upload a skill.
  3. Repeat for each skill you want. You do not need all of them on day one - start with the workflows you will actually use.
  4. Once added, a skill activates automatically when a Shopify marketing task comes up. There is nothing to invoke manually in chat.

Which skills to prioritise

Workflow areaUse it for
Ecommerce SEOProduct and collection pages that rank and read well.
Conversion rate optimizationFinding and fixing friction in the buying journey.
Email and SMS marketingCampaigns and flows aimed at your actual customers.
Upselling and cross-sellingRelevant add-ons and bundles that raise basket value.

These four areas are part of a wider set covering ecommerce SEO, conversion rate optimization, email and SMS marketing, upselling, cross-selling and more.

3. Step 2 - Connect Shopify to Claude

  1. On claude.ai, go to Customize → Connectors (or click “+” in the chat box → Browse connectors).
  2. Switch to the Connectors tab and search for “Shopify”.
  3. Click Connect on the official Shopify connector.

Step 3 - Authorise your store

  1. You will be sent to your Shopify admin login. Log in - or pick the store if you manage several.
  2. Shopify shows the access level requested: read-only (view products, orders, customers) or read / write (also create or edit). Review it carefully.
  3. Click Install / Approve. You will return to Claude and Shopify will show as Connected.
  4. If you later ask for something that needs more access, Claude will ask you to re-authorize.

Developer check: Confirm you connected the intended store before running any write prompt. With several stores under one login, picking the wrong store at Step 3 is the easiest mistake to make - and the hardest to spot later.

4. Step 4 - Run the six test prompts

Run these in order. The first four are read-only and prove Claude can see the right store. The last two create real objects, so run them only on read / write access - and check the results in Shopify admin afterwards.

Read-only checks

  1. What's my shop's name, domain, and current plan?
  2. Show me my 10 most recent orders and their fulfillment status.
  3. Search my catalog for products with 'shirt' in the title and flag any that are low on inventory.
  4. Who are my top 5 customers by number of orders?

Write checks - create real objects

  1. Create a 15%-off discount code called WELCOME15.
  2. Create a collection called 'Fall Favorites' and add these five products to it: [product names].

Replace [product names] in Prompt 6 with five real products from your catalog. After Prompt 5, confirm WELCOME15 exists in Shopify admin before sharing it with anyone. After Prompt 6, open the Fall Favorites collection and confirm all five products are inside it.

If Prompt 1 returns the wrong shop name or domain, stop. Disconnect and reconnect, and pick the correct store at the Shopify login step.

5. Put the connection to work

Once the test prompts pass, the same chat can run day-to-day marketing work against live store data. Keep each request specific - name the product, collection, segment or time window - and review Claude's output before it goes live.

Ecommerce SEO

Audit product titles and descriptions, spot thin collection pages, and prioritise fixes by what is actually in the catalog.

Conversion rate optimization

Review the path from product page to checkout and list the friction points to fix first.

Email and SMS marketing

Draft campaigns for real segments - for example your top customers from Prompt 4 - instead of a generic list.

Upsell and cross-sell

Use order and catalog data to suggest pairings that make sense, then package them as collections or offers.

Good working habits

Ask for a summary or draft first, then approve the write.

  • Verify every discount code and collection in Shopify admin after creation.
  • Re-run the read-only prompts after any store change - plan, domain or catalog - to confirm Claude still sees the right data.

Keep prompts that worked in a shared doc, so the whole team reuses them.

6. Safety, access and troubleshooting

Access rules to keep

  • Review the access level at authorisation every time - read-only is view products, orders and customers; read / write also creates and edits.
  • Expect a re-authorization request if you ask for something that needs more access than you granted. That prompt is the safeguard working, not an error.
  • Use the official Shopify connector only, found through Customize → Connectors.
  • Verify write actions in Shopify admin. A chat confirmation is not a substitute for seeing WELCOME15 or Fall Favorites in the store.

Troubleshooting
