Claude Skills for Content Writing: What to Build and How

For content writing, build small Skills for repeatable jobs: a brief builder, a draft-to-outline checker, a style editor, a headline and meta writer, and a repurposing skill. Each is a folder with a SKILL.md whose description says when to use it. Use Projects for brand facts and Styles for tone; Skills hold the procedures.

Skills, Projects and Styles: which does what

  • Style: how Claude sounds. Tone, sentence length, formality. Applies to any chat where you select it.
  • Project: what Claude knows for one body of work. Instructions plus knowledge files such as your voice guide, product facts and past articles.
  • Skill: how Claude does a specific task, step by step. Loaded only when the task matches the skill's description, and reusable across projects.

A common mistake is putting procedures in project instructions. They then apply to every chat in the project, even when you only wanted a quick question answered. Move procedures into skills and keep project instructions short.

Five skills worth building

  1. content-brief: turns a topic and keyword cluster into a brief with audience, angle, direct answer, outline and sources to check.
  2. outline-check: compares a draft with its brief and flags missing sections, unanswered questions and unsupported claims.
  3. plain-human-writing: edits prose to remove filler and AI-sounding patterns. See the separate guide for a full template.
  4. headline-meta: writes 5 title options under 60 characters, a meta description under 160, and an H1, all matched to the search intent.
  5. repurpose: turns one article into a newsletter, a LinkedIn post and short social posts, each in the right length and format.

A template you can adapt

content-brief/SKILL.md

---
name: content-brief
description: Creates a content brief for a blog post or landing page from a topic, keyword list or customer question. Use when asked to plan, brief or outline an article.
---

# Content brief

1. Restate the reader and their question in one sentence.
2. Write a 40-60 word direct answer to the main question.
3. Propose an H2 outline. Each H2 answers one sub-question.
4. List 4 FAQs drawn from real questions in the input.
5. List facts that must be verified before publishing, with the type of source to check.
6. Suggest 3 internal links from the site map in project knowledge.

Do not invent statistics. Mark anything uncertain as TO VERIFY.

Keep the body focused: the platform guidance is to keep SKILL.md instructions short and move long reference material into separate files in the same folder, which Claude reads only when needed.

Install and switch on

  1. In claude.ai, turn on Code execution and file creation in Settings > Capabilities.
  2. Zip each skill folder and upload it with Upload skill in the Skills section.
  3. In Claude Code, place folders in ~/.claude/skills/ (personal) or .claude/skills/ (per project).
  4. Test each skill with a real task and check that Claude announces or clearly uses it.

Write descriptions that trigger correctly

Claude decides whether to load a skill from its description, so the description is the most important line in the file. State the task and the situations, using the words you would type: "Use when asked to plan, brief or outline an article." Avoid overlap between skills, or Claude may pick the wrong one.

Only install skills you trust: A skill can include scripts that run when it is used. Read any downloaded skill before uploading it, and prefer skills from sources you know.

Copy-paste prompts

Turn a process into a skill

Here is how I currently write a blog post, step by step: [describe]. Turn it into a SKILL.md with a name in lowercase-hyphen format, a description under 300 characters that says what it does and when to use it, and numbered instructions under 400 words.

Audit my skills for overlap

Here are the names and descriptions of my skills: [paste]. Identify any two that could trigger for the same request, and rewrite their descriptions so each has a clear, separate trigger.

Run the brief skill

Use the content-brief skill for the topic "[topic]" with these keywords and questions: [paste]. My site map is in project knowledge.

Troubleshooting

  • The skill never triggers Make the description name the task in everyday words and include phrases you actually type. Check the skill's toggle is on.
  • The wrong skill triggers Two descriptions overlap. Narrow each one to a single job and situation.
  • Skill works in claude.ai but not in Claude Code Custom skills do not sync across surfaces. Copy the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ or the project's .claude/skills/.
  • Output ignores brand facts Skills hold procedures, not knowledge. Keep facts in the project knowledge and run the skill inside that project.

FAQ

Are Claude Skills good for content writing?

Yes, for repeatable tasks such as briefs, editing passes, headlines and repurposing. They keep a consistent process without pasting long prompts into every chat.

What is the difference between a Claude Skill and a Project?

A Project holds instructions and knowledge files for one body of work. A Skill holds step-by-step instructions for a specific task and loads only when a request matches its description, in any project.

Do I need to code to make a Claude Skill?

No. A basic skill is a folder with one SKILL.md text file. Scripts are optional and only needed for tasks such as counting characters or checking files.

Where do I upload a skill in Claude?

Go to Settings > Capabilities, make sure code execution is on, then use Upload skill in the Skills section and select a ZIP of the skill folder.
